Game Recognizes Game

Elite athletes will sometimes say that “game recognizes game” (or occasionally more grammatically suspect variants of that). By this is meant that someone who is particularly skilled at something is uniquely qualified to acknowledge a similarly high skill level in another.

Jesus’ lordship is not revealed primarily through the studied recognition of the experts (“you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants,” Matt. 11:25, NRSVUE).

But the tribute offered by the Magi still communicates something important about Christ as King. His coming is celebrated by both the simple (shepherds) and the learned (wise men). Psalm 72 amplifies kings recognizing kingship in vv. 10-11, which is echoed when the Magi bring Jesus gifts.
