A truly remarkable example of sacrificial courage took place in Folsom, New Mexico, in 1908. When a flood was racing toward the valley, a resident from the hills warned a local woman, S. J. Brooks, the local telephone operator to flee to safety. Yet, instead of saving herself, she used the hour she had left to alert others. One by one, she called her fellow townspeople, warning them of the imminent danger. Her selfless bravery saved more than forty families. Later, her lifeless body was found twelve miles down the canyon, still wearing the telephone headpiece—a symbol of her final act of sacrificial courage.
