The Gingerbread Man
There’s a charming story about a little boy who made a gingerbread man. He poured his heart into crafting it, carefully decorating it with candy eyes and a cheerful smile. It was his creation, and he was proud of it. After baking the gingerbread man, he set it on the counter to admire, but to his surprise, the gingerbread man sprang to life and dashed out the door!
The boy chased after it, calling out, but the gingerbread man was too fast and soon disappeared. For two days, the boy searched high and low. Then, while passing a bakery, he spotted his gingerbread man in the window, labeled with a price tag: five cents. Elated, the boy ran inside and demanded the shopkeeper give him what was rightfully his.
“I made that gingerbread man!” he said.
The shopkeeper replied, “I don’t care who made it. If you want it, it’ll cost you a nickel.”
The boy reached into his pocket, handed over the coin, and reclaimed his creation. Holding it close, he said, “Now you are mine—twice over. First, because I made you, and now because I’ve bought you.”
