Sinner and Saints

Dwight Lyman, better known as D.L. Moody was a renowned evangelist, publisher, and preacher during the late 19th century. On one occasion, he was invited to guest preach at a local church. Soon after arriving, a small group of elders approached him and pointed out a notable distinction between their church and others. The key difference was that members of their congregation often left the church service before the sermon concluded.

Acknowledging their concern, Moody calmly responded, "Fair enough." Taking the pulpit, he addressed the congregation, saying, "Ladies and gentlemen, today I wish to speak to two distinct groups: sinners and saints." After preaching for some time, Moody eventually declared, "Now, I have finished addressing the sinners. If any among you fall into that category and wish to depart, feel free. I will now turn my attention to the saints."

To their surprise, not a single person left the service—a first in the church's history. This event underscored a profound truth: while many acknowledge their status as sinners privately, publicly admitting it is a different matter altogether. In essence, it is one thing to recognize one's sinful nature internally but quite another to confront it openly. For one great example of sin being acknowledged, click here.
