Humor Preludes Faith and Begins Prayer
Humor points to faith in that both humor and faith spring up in response to the reality of the paradox and the incongruities at the heart of human experience. But while humor responds well to the lower levels of these incongruities, only faith can respond well to the higher ones. Humor in that sense points beyond itself toward faith. In Niebuhr’s words, “Humor is, in fact, a prelude to faith; and laughter is the beginning of prayer.”
