In my first few years as a gardener, I spent quite a bit of time trying to understand how to grow the best vegetables. One thing I’ve always loved about gardening is composting–that is, taking our supposed waste and turning it into rich nutrient-dense fertilizer for the next year’s crops. I remember in those early years watching a lecture on composting, and the speaker was talking about how, each year, millions of people rake up their leaves and send them to a landfill.
What they are not aware of is that those leaves, seemingly pointless and merely a nuisance, have been growing all season long, receiving tons of beneficial nutrients from the tree itself… and then we simply throw them away.
What aspects of our own lives, what elements of our own past do we perceive as merely dead weight, and yet might actually be part of the solution to our own healing? What is “dead” inside us that perhaps we’ve ignored, stuffed down, tried our best to ignore, that may hold some of the keys to us being the revitalized, flourishing people of God that we have been chosen for?
