Walking the Dog as an Analogy for Adversity
In C. S. Lewis’ classic work Mere Christianity, the English apologist compares God’s use of adversity to walking a dog on a leash. When the dog wraps its leash around a pole and tries to move forward, it only tightens the restraint. The owner, understanding the best path forward, may pull in the opposite direction to free the dog, even though it resists. In the same way, God sometimes leads through adversity, redirecting the path even when it feels contrary to one’s own desires.
