What Keeps us from Experiencing Renewal

There’s a quote by H. Richard Niebuhr that I believe is absolutely true.  “The great Christian revolutions,” he argued, “come not by the discovery of something that was not known before. They happen when somebody takes radically something that was always there.”

Every culture has a way of domesticating the gospel and creating certain accommodations to it. In the Medieval period, the accommodation was often towards violence. Jesus’ words in the Sermon on the Mount were routinely ignored.

In our time, there are at least a few ways in which we have domesticated the gospel, but perhaps none more powerful than our comfortability with great wealth and the constant treadmill of work that is required to fuel our voracious appetites for more and more stuff. If we want to experience a “great Christian revolution,” we may need to part with our dearly earned money and all the stuff we are constantly consuming.
