A Glimpse of Eternal Life
An ancient legend tells of a well-respected rabbi who would vanish from his synagogue for a few hours each Sabbath. His mysterious absences sparked curiosity among his students, who wondered if their teacher had found a secret place to commune with God. One Sabbath, they decided that a student would discreetly follow him to uncover the mystery. In amazement, the student watched the rabbi change into the rough clothing of a beggar and weave through the city’s backstreets to a humble shack. Through a small window, the student observed as his mentor tenderly cared for an elderly, bedridden man—changing his clothes, tidying his room, and preparing his meal. Returning to the synagogue, the other students greeted him with eager questions: “Did he ascend into heaven?” they asked. The student replied, “Yes, perhaps even higher!” For in that act of mercy, he had witnessed a glimpse of true holiness.
