Few voices captured the brutal reality of enslavement as powerfully as Sojourner Truth. Truth endured profound mistreatment and indignities as an enslaved woman. A severe beating left her reliant on a cane for the rest of her life, yet she remained unwavering in her pursuit of justice. She became a fierce advocate for both the abolition of slavery and the rights of women.

In 1851, she delivered her most famous speech, Ain’t I A Woman?, a passionate declaration that challenged prevailing societal prejudices and demanded recognition of the dignity and strength of all women.

Look at me! Look at my arm. I have plowed, I have planted, and I have gathered into barns. And no man could head me. And ain’t I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as man—when I could get it—and bear the lash as well! And ain’t I a woman? I have borne children and seen most of them sold into slavery, and when I cried out with a mother’s grief, none but Jesus heard me. And ain’t I a woman?
