My Gift to You

One day, the famous surrealist painter Salvador Dalí walked into a New York bookstore and asked for a copy of his own autobiography, The Secret Life of Salvador Dalí. The young clerk immediately recognized the flamboyant artist and quickly retrieved the book, carefully beginning to wrap it up.

“Have you read it?” Dalí asked, peering at the clerk.

“No, I’m afraid not,” the young man admitted as he handed over the neatly wrapped package.

With dramatic generosity, Dalí pushed the book back across the counter. “Take it,” he declared. “It is my gift to you. Would you like me to autograph it for you?”

The astonished clerk eagerly tore open the package and handed Dalí a pen, thrilled at the unexpected gesture. With a flourish, Dalí signed the book and walked out of the store, leaving the clerk marveling at his good fortune.

It wasn’t until Dalí had left the building that the young man, gazing at the treasured autograph, realized something was amiss. In all his magnanimity, the great artist had forgotten—or perhaps deliberately neglected—to pay for the book.

Dalí’s spontaneous blend of charm, audacity, and self-promotion left the clerk with a story as priceless as the signature in his hands. True to form, the surrealist genius had once again turned an ordinary transaction into a moment of whimsical theater, leaving behind both an unforgettable memory and an unpaid bill.
