The Kingdom is Here for Me
A young Russian, deeply moved by the teachings of Tolstoy and the New Testament, had become a conscientious objector. Standing before a magistrate, he spoke passionately about a life that loves its enemies, does good to those who mistreat it, overcomes evil with good, and refuses to take part in war.
The judge listened and replied, “I understand. But you must be practical. The principles you’re describing belong to the kingdom of God—and it hasn’t come yet.”
The young man took a moment and then responded, “Sir, I understand that it has not come for you, nor for Russia or the world. But the kingdom of God has come for me. I cannot continue hating and killing as though it hadn’t.”
