The Terrible Darkness of Mother Teresa

Many of us assume that our spiritual heroes do not have to experience the same inner-wrestling that we do. Mother Teresa, beloved across the world is one such figure we might “assume” didn’t have to deal with the same insecurities, the same  inner-criticism, the same darkness that we do. The truth, as many have come to see is far from the truth. Here is a short excerpt that shares the deep pain Teresa experienced at various times in her life:

There is such terrible darkness within me, as if everything was dead . . . I do not know how deeper will this trial go—how much pain and suffering it will bring to me. This does not worry me anymore. I leave this to Him as I leave everything else . . . Let Him do with me whatever He wants as He wants for as long as He wants if my darkness is light to some soul.
