When Martin Luther discovered that some had begun calling the first Protestants “Lutherans,” he strongly objected. It is funny to think that some 500 years later, many are still known by his name:
What is Luther? The teaching is not mine. Nor was I crucified for anyone. . . . How did I, poor stinking bag of maggots that I am, come to the point where people call the children of Christ by my evil name?
Luther was deeply concerned about the danger of pride in ministry. He warned against preachers who sought popularity and praise, saying, “May God protect us against the preachers who please all people and enjoy a good testimony from everybody.” Instead, he insisted that faithful pastors should preach only God’s Word and seek only God’s glory. “Likewise, the hearers should also say: ‘I do not believe in my pastor, but he tells me of another Lord whose name is Christ; him he shows me.’”
