The Bible in Batman
In the 2008 Batman film, The Dark Knight, the Joker (played by Heath Ledger) tries to get Batman to reveal his identity by kidnapping and executing one citizen every day until he reveals himself. Bruce Wayne feels the weight of responsibility—it is the Joker killing them, but he feels responsible for their deaths.
For all the flaws of the superhero genre, there is something very Christian about the classic superhero: Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Daredevil, they are all attractive to us because they self-sacrificially care for the lives and welfare of others, just because they are people.
Under the silly costumes, what really attracts us to them is deeply biblical, that “greater love has no one than this…” and “in humility count others more significant than yourselves.”
