George Matheson was just entering the bewildering teenage years when doctors informed him he was going blind. Undeterred, he pressed on with his education and graduated from the University of Glasgow at the age of nineteen. By the time he completed seminary, he had completely lost his sight. Soon after, his fiancée broke off their engagement, returning his ring with a note: “I cannot see my way clear to go through life bound by the chains of marriage to a blind man.”
Matheson would never marry. Though he adjusted to a world without sight, he never completely healed from the wound of that heartbreak. Nevertheless, he went on to become a deeply gifted pastor and a poetic preacher. His life was full and faithful, yet the pain of lost love lingered.
Years later, at his sister’s wedding, the searing pain of his unrequited love for his fiancé returned. In that moment of ache, he turned to the enduring love of God—and poured his heart into a hymn that has comforted generations:
O Love that wilt not let me go,
I rest my weary soul in Thee;
I give Thee back the life I owe,
That in Thine ocean depths its flow
May richer, fuller be.
Penned on June 6, 1882, those words remind us that even in our deepest losses, the love of God holds fast.
