James I. Packer
James I. Packer (1926–2020) was a renowned English-born evangelical theologian, author, and scholar, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in 20th-century evangelical thought. Born in London, Packer spent much of his career teaching and writing, significantly shaping modern evangelical theology and spiritual formation. He is perhaps best known for his bestselling book Knowing God, which has had a profound impact on Christians worldwide, encouraging a deeper and more intimate relationship with God through knowledge of His character and nature.
Packer received his education at Oxford University, where he studied theology, and later taught at several academic institutions, including the University of Bristol and Regent College in Vancouver, Canada. Throughout his career, he combined rigorous academic scholarship with pastoral sensitivity, offering theological insights that were both deeply intellectual and highly practical for Christian life.
A prominent voice within the Anglican tradition, Packer was deeply involved in evangelical renewal, especially through his association with the Evangelical Alliance and his involvement in the development of global evangelical networks. His theological perspectives were characterized by a high view of Scripture, a commitment to the Reformed tradition, and a deep understanding of the doctrine of salvation by grace through faith.
In addition to Knowing God, Packer authored numerous other influential works, including Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God, A Grief Observed, and God Has Spoken, addressing topics such as the authority of Scripture, Christian spirituality, and the nature of God’s sovereignty.
Packer’s legacy extends far beyond his written works, as he mentored countless pastors, scholars, and laypeople throughout his life. His unwavering commitment to the gospel, biblical truth, and spiritual depth continues to inspire generations of Christians today.
