If you’ve ever watched a war movie, or a film that takes place in the military, you’re likely to have encountered a specific scene, in which a subordinate will have something to tell a senior officer that they don’t want to hear. It acts as a cue to both the audience and the commanding officer the stakes are being raised and the problem has gotten worse… “the enemies are at the gates,” “Godzilla has entered the city,” “Maverick is off the reservation…”
That phrase is: permission to speak freely, sir/ma'am”.…
