Jim Forest
Jim Forest (1941–2022) was a prominent writer, peace activist, and spiritual mentor whose life was dedicated to the pursuit of justice, peacemaking, and spiritual growth. Known for his deep commitment to nonviolence and Christian faith, Forest authored numerous books on spirituality, social justice, and the lives of saints, leaving a lasting legacy in the fields of peace activism and Christian spirituality.
Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, Forest grew up in a family deeply shaped by social and political engagement. As a young man, he converted to Christianity, a turning point that would shape his life’s work. Forest became involved in the Catholic Worker movement in the 1960s, working closely with Dorothy Day. His time in the movement instilled in him a lifelong commitment to social justice, hospitality to the poor, and resistance to war.
An outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War, Forest co-founded the Catholic Peace Fellowship and played a significant role in the broader peace movement. He was arrested multiple times for acts of civil disobedience, including draft resistance, and his activism inspired many others to engage in nonviolent protest.
Forest was also a prolific writer, authoring works such as Living with Wisdom: A Life of Thomas Merton, All Is Grace: A Biography of Dorothy Day, and Ladder of the Beatitudes. His books combined historical narrative, theological insight, and practical guidance, drawing readers into a deeper understanding of faith and peacemaking.
Later in life, Forest became a member of the Orthodox Church, which influenced his spiritual writings. He lectured widely, mentoring many in the fields of spirituality and activism. Forest’s life embodied the integration of faith and action, leaving an enduring example of what it means to live a life dedicated to peace, justice, and compassion.
