Chuck DeGroat

Chuck DeGroat (LPC, PhD) is a respected theologian, licensed therapist, spiritual director, and author whose work focuses on pastoral care, spiritual formation, and the integration of psychology and theology. He serves as a professor of pastoral care and Christian spirituality at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan, where he equips future leaders to care for others with compassion and wisdom. In addition to his role at the seminary, he is a senior fellow at the Newbigin House of Studies in San Francisco, a center for theological education and missional engagement.

Before his academic career, DeGroat served as a pastor for more than a decade, ministering at churches in Orlando, Florida, and San Francisco, California. Recognizing the need for holistic care in church communities, he founded two church-based counseling centers that provided integrated support for spiritual, emotional, and relational health. His unique background as both a pastor and licensed therapist gives him valuable insight into the challenges leaders face in ministry and the importance of cultivating wholehearted living.

DeGroat is the author of several books that reflect his commitment to addressing the complexities of human relationships and spiritual growth. His works include Toughest People to Love, which offers guidance for navigating difficult relationships with empathy and grace, and Wholeheartedness: Busyness, Exhaustion, and Healing the Divided Self, a call to live authentically and embrace the healing power of God’s love.

A sought-after speaker and consultant, DeGroat provides resources and training for churches and organizations worldwide, helping leaders and communities navigate the intersection of faith, mental health, and personal transformation. He is known for his approachable style, deep empathy, and profound commitment to integrating theology and psychology. Chuck lives with his wife, Sara, and their family, finding joy in meaningful conversations, literature, and life-giving relationships.
