Sports and the Spiritual Life
Is sports a rival religion? It can feel that way. From the over-the-top fervor of fans to families skipping church for Sunday morning youth-sports games, it can seem like the church is losing.
On the other hand, sports can inspire loyalty, teamwork, good habits, and healthy living. These are all good things and can be part of discipleship. They can involve pushing our bodies and spirits to excellence in a way which honors the Creator of those bodies. It's no surprise, then, that the Apostle Paul frequently makes use of sports metaphors for driving home powerful points about the Christian life to his readers.
Then and now, sports provide powerful and accessible ways of communicating matters of the spirit to the people of God. There is a built-in shared language and experience in sports that you can use to bring the Word to life for your congregation.
TPW has assembled a variety of resources to help inspire and guide you as you preach and worship on topics related to sports.
