Amid the Fireworks, What is the Spirit Saying?
Independence Day is a civic, not sacred, holiday. As much as we American Christians may love our country—it is not our home—and we have a higher allegiance and citizenship.
But this distinction between civic and sacred doesn't mean that the Church has nothing to say. We are followers of Christ in every area of our lives, not just in the privacy of our homes. We must be salt and light in our communities, speaking truth and loving our neighbors. The Fourth of July is a good time to assess: what is your congregation's role in your community, local and national? What message might the Spirit have to your congregation for doing God's work in this community, with its history, desires, and culture? What are ways your congregation should be praying for the country which, however much they may love, is not their ultimate home?
