In his book “Where Is God When It Hurts?”, author Philip Yancey shares an unfortunate, yet central dynamic related to how Americans respond to pain: we do everything possible to avoid it. That means popping an aspirin at the slightest ache to silence the pain. The problem with this approach is that it only deals with the symptoms of the problem, never the problem itself. Sometimes, when we remove the pain signals, we remove the warning system that is there to help us.
