Refiner’s fires are used on precious metals, not for mundane elements.
The refiner must hold the metal in the hottest part of the fire in order to burn off all the impurities, thus retrieving a pure and valuable result. The silversmith was a skilled artisan who controlled the temperature and used bellows to control the air flow. This was not a process that was left to run all by itself for the silversmith had to be present.
