Paul’s term for the return of Jesus is called the parousia. Parousia was used to describe an imperial visit by a king to a city. People would send a delegation outside the city gates to greet the dignitary. Those who went out to meet the dignitary always returned with the dignitary into their city. So Paul is describing “an escort to earth.” When Jesus returns, those who are alive will rise to greet him and accompany him on his descent.…
