We sometimes imagine surrender to God as emotional starvation. Every pleasure feels suspicious, and every passion feels in competition with our love of God. We think that the more miserable we are in the world, the better we are at surrendering ourselves to God. Often, our loves can indeed compete with God in our hearts.
However, a life in surrender is not a life void of every pleasure except for God. On the contrary, we are encouraged to enjoy life fully, but in the knowledge that every good thing exists subservient to God. Imagine it like a game of chess.
