In Tim Keller’s sermon on John 2, he calls his hearers to think about their experiences of being guests at a wedding. If you are married, you are likely remembering your own wedding day. If you are unmarried, perhaps you are dreaming of your own wedding day.
Keller suggests that Jesus is somewhat lost in thought when he is approached by his mother. He is attending a wedding and can’t help but think of his own wedding day. He knows exactly what his wedding will involve, and he is troubled. Keller says, “He is thinking about what it will take for him to provide wine for his wedding feast.” The wedding banquet of the Messiah will only come about by the path that comes through his death on the cross.
