Summer Sermon Series

Ecclesiastes

A New Series from TPW for 2026

Why do so many Christians credit this book for carrying them through hard times? On the surface, it seems bleak. But if we look deeper, we see God's goodness and grace shining through.

A series created for TPW by Allen Thompson, Fairview Presbyterian Church

"Meaningless! Meaningless!" says the Teacher. "Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless."

-Ecclesiastes 1:2 (NIV)

That's how one of the most inspiring books of the Bible begins—believe it or not.

Granted, Ecclesiastes does not sound inspirational from the start—or at many points in the middle, for that matter—but many followers of Jesus credit this book of wisdom with helping preserve their faith through difficult and confusing times. After all, who hasn’t had moments of questioning the point of it all? Who hasn’t wondered what God wants us to do when we seem stuck in dark times and a disordered world?

Those difficult times are often when God breaks through and sustains us with hope. The seeming pessimism of Ecclesiastes allows the author to shine new light on God's goodness and grace.

You just have to know where and how to look.

The enigmatic author of this book sets up a unique rhythm that expresses and responds to deep yearnings and responds to them by looking to God's designs and purposes. This rhythm continues throughout the book as it confronts topics your congregation is already wrestling with:

  • work

  • wealth

  • wisdom

  • pleasure

Are these things truly meaningless?  Perhaps—or perhaps we see them for their true value if we learn to find meaning in a different source. (Hint: we should learn to find meaning in a different source.)

Ecclesiastes helps us see how we can go from despair about the world to contentment in what God has given. That is easier said than done, because the world tempts us to measure success and seek validation on its terms.  But on God’s terms, we discover that joy comes from what He has already enabled us to do and contribute, not from the world’s fickle offerings.

Preach Something Different This Summer

Try Ecclesiastes if you want to go right to the angst in the world, the sense of the good life everyone wants, and the discontent that today’s culture conditions us to carry.

Try Ecclesiastes if you want to equip your people to see the good news at the end of the day, every day.

Try Ecclesiastes if you're ready to open the Word to your congregation in a new way.
