Post-Resurrection Appearances

The four Gospel writers vary in which and how many of Jesus’ thirteen post-resurrection appearances they choose to record. Luke reserves each one of the five episodes containing the risen Jesus that he records for the final chapter of his Gospel (these exclude an additional two appearing in the book of Acts) and their order of appearance seems to betray a certain logic. Those who were first to experience Jesus’ resurrection in Lk 24:1–12 do so by means of the empty tomb and the testimony of the angels, but as the chapter progresses, Jesus Himself appears to two disciples on the road to Emmaus (Lk 24:13–35), and then, finally, the rest of the rest of the disciples in our passage from today, viz., Lk 24:36–48.
