The Upper Room Discourse
Our Gospel reading for today takes place within what has come to be known as the “Upper Room discourse,” a stretch of Scripture unique to John’s Gospel that begins with his account of the Last Supper in the “Upper Room” in chapter 13 and that ends just before his betrayal in the Garden of Gethsemane in chapter 17.
This section of Scripture contains a block of teaching reserved just for Jesus’ closest and most intimate disciples as He prepares them for life in His absence after His ascension into Heaven.
