IDENTITY AND SUFFERING

The key to understanding today’s readings lies in the first half of 1 Peter. Two themes dominate Peter’s encouragement to these early Christians: identity and suffering.

Knowing Who We Are Explains What We Experience

Peter begins with identity for a reason. Suffering can only be interpreted rightly in light of who we are in Christ. Without that anchor, suffering feels random, cruel, and meaningless—something that simply happens to us.

Even when we know who we are, suffering is still painful. But without that knowledge, it becomes unbearable.
