What's the historical context?

The times after Jesus’ ascension were both an exciting time full of the Spirit’s work in the church, as well as a time of great confusion. One of the reasons that early teachers like Peter or Paul wrote to the church was to help answer questions and clarify areas where followers of Jesus weren’t sure where they were going. If Jesus conquered sin and death in his resurrection and then ascended victoriously to reign over the whole of creation, why is there still suffering?
