Prayers of Confession on Technology

We have been created by God, to be loved by God, and to receive our identity from God. But in our everyday lives, as we go about our work, school, interacting with our family and friends, we don’t always behold God and receive our identity from him. We call other things holy. So as we come before God in worship this morning, we acknowledge that and we pray that our whole lives will be formed in worship of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Let’s pray:

Heavenly Father, there are parts of our lives where we don’t acknowledge you as Lord:

Often we are unsatisfied with who you have made us to be

We seek validation from others more than we seek it from you

Lord Jesus, there are parts of our lives where we don’t acknowledge you as Saviour:

Often our first response to challenges in life is problem-solving rather than prayer

Instead of being shaped by your cross, we try to avoid pain and suffering

And this disconnects us from our neighbours

Holy Spirit, there are parts of our lives where we don’t look to you for hope:

Often we fear the unknowns of the future

Or we put our hope in technology, education, or celebrities

And don’t believe that you are working all things for good

Father, we come before you and acknowledge our weakness and our distraction.

We believe and trust you Lord, help our unbelief.

Renew us through your Holy Spirit

And give us the same heart as Christ Jesus

To love you with all our heart

And love our neighbour as ourselves

Amen

Almighty God, during this tumultuous time, we see so clearly our frailty and powerlessness. Any illusions of strength and grandeur have been stripped away. We are utterly dependent upon you. Even with technology, we are still gripped with fear, anxiety, and isolation. We see that have placed our trust in idols of wood and stone. We see how desperately we need your grace every day. Please help us to trust you completely and to give of ourselves when we are so tempted to live selfishly. We confess to you all of our self-centered thoughts and actions. In your mercy, hear our prayer.

Time of silent reflection and confession…

Let us pray.

Almighty, powerful, creator God

So often we think we know best.

We confess to you our sin alongside the sin of all humanity.

We have tried to master creation rather than care for it.

We have abused the sea, the land and the air.

We have polluted, we have taken more than we needed and we have not trusted in your abundant provision.

Lord have mercy

Lord have mercy

We confess to you our sin alongside the sin of all humanity.

As participants in one of the richest societies on earth

We have taken for granted technologies, luxury goods, and leisure.

We repent of the hunger, suffering, mistreatment and slavery

Which our wealth has created for others.

Free us and them.

Christ have mercy

Christ have mercy

We confess to you our sin alongside the sin of all humanity.

As we have known your creation more fully

We have found less need to know you.

We have thought that we will find the answers to all our questions by looking hard enough

In our amazement at the wonder of creation we have not stopped to be amazed by you.

Lord, have mercy

Lord have mercy
