Prayers of Confession on Sin
Adapted from Psalm 6
Holy God, Father most gracious! Rebuke us not in your anger, nor chasten us in your wrath! Heal us from our sin, for we are troubled. Deliver us for the sake of your steadfast love. Our sins trouble us, O God. We are troubled by how they have hurt others. We are troubled by how they have hurt us. Your ways are right! O righteous God! and whenever we have refused to follow them we have found out how right they are. Have mercy on us, O God. Have mercy! Holy God, God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Have mercy on us for the sake of your Son,
Who died to free us from our sins.
To you be honor and glory! Amen.

Pastor: Heavenly Father, I confess that I have sinned against you. I have delighted my soul in other things more than I have in you. Why, then, is it any surprise to me that you feel far off from me? I have driven you away!
All: In my arrogance, I have enjoyed the comforts of this world while I care too little that the poor cannot feed or care for themselves. Because of my greed, I boast of all that I have and all that I desire.
Pastor: In one moment, I believe that I’m invincible, able to withstand any problem or struggle. In the next moment, I believe that the evil all around me is out to get me. My mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression; under my tongue are mischief and iniquity.
All: O God, forgive me of my sin. Look on me with mercy, and give me grace to delight in you, rather than in my sin. Lift me out of this pit of sin, cleanse me of my unrighteousness, and fill me with your Holy Spirit so that I might walk in holiness and obey your commandments.

All: O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

Dear Lord Jesus, we feel our sins. They bite and gnaw and terrify us. Where shall we go? We will look to You, Lord Jesus, and believe in You. Although our faith is often weak, we look to You and find assurance, for You have promised, “He that believes in Me shall have everlasting life.” Our conscience is burdened and our sins make us tremble, but You have said: “Be of good cheer, your sins are forgiven and I will raise you up on the last day and you shall have eternal life.” We cannot do any of this for ourselves. Lord Jesus Christ, you are quicker to forgive us than we are to brings our sin before you. We worry that the sin we carry is too deep for you to pardon or too evil for you to bear. We forget that you are a God of second chances—that you forgive us and send us back out to serve you again. Remind us again by your Holy Spirit that our reluctance to ask for your forgiveness is a sin that you long to forgive. Pardon us for this and all of our sins, as we continue to confess in silence…

Gracious God, I am reminded today of the horrible pain that sin causes. How many lives are destroyed by sin? How many families rent apart? How many parents overcome with grief? And this is just the beginning. Lord, have mercy on us!
Indeed, you do show us mercy. Most of all, you have done so in Christ, who has borne our pain and suffering so that we might be set free from sin, suffering, and death. Thank you for this amazing sacrifice.
Lord, as we still live in a world wracked by sin and suffering, may we find comfort and hope in you. May we be agents of your good news and healing in the places we live, in our families, workplaces, churches, communities.
Today, Lord, we pray especially for families suffering from division and for parents who have lost their children. Pour out your comfort and love. Lord, have mercy! Amen.
Holy God, we have deceived ourselves into believing our sins aren’t that bad, that Your grace isn’t enough, and that we can earn Your forgiveness. We have embraced the stable misery of sin- fractured relationships rather than seeking true reconciliation through Your grace and mercy. We have lived as people pacified by our possessions and dulled by our duties, rather than being jolted by Your Spirit to live as Christ out in the world. We speak of sacrifice flippantly, we refuse to step outside of our comfort zones, and we don’t want to do what it really takes to take up Your cross and follow You. Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save,
Nor his ear too dull to hear.
But your iniquities have separated you from your God;
Your sins have hidden his face from you,
So that he will not hear.
For your hands are stained with blood,
Your fingers with guilt.
Your lips have spoken lies,
And your tongue mutters wicked things.
No one calls for justice;
