Prayers of Confession on Memory

Adapted from Deuteronomy 8:11-20

Pastor: Oh Lord our God, we have forgotten who you are and what you have done for us. Your great and miraculous works for us are lost in the recesses of our minds, and we could notcare less about your commandments.

All: You have provided us with good nourishment; we think our own hands have provided it. You have provided us with sufficient shelter; we credit ourselves with the strength. You have filled us with joy; we are happy with ourselves.

Pastor: Father you have promised that you would walk with us through all of life, even when we sin. We trust you, even now, only because you have forgiven us through Jesus Christ’s own shed blood for us.

All: Renew our strength because our souls are parched by the dessert sun. Give us the peace that passes understanding the joy that is only found in Jesus Christ.

Lord, our hearts are not large enough,

our memory is not good enough,

our wills are not strong enough:

ake our hearts and enlarge them,

Take our memories and give them quicker recall,

Take our wills and make them strong

and give us greater awareness of you–

being ever present,

ever alongside us.

Holy God, we forget you are near.
We forget that you are everywhere.
We are so wrapped up in our own worlds that we cannot see beyond ourselves.
God, you are so much greater!
Lift up our heads.
Lift up our eyes.
May we see you.
May we see others,
And may we help them to lift up their hearts in worship to you.

Gracious God, you shower us with so many blessings, yet we struggle to share them with others. You love a cheerful giver, but we sometimes give grudgingly. We forget that all we have is yours, and that you can use our gifts to bless the whole world. Give us generous hearts which long to share our bounty, giving extravagantly, loving at great risk, and working for justice in seemingly impossible situations. Forgive us for clutching too tightly what has always been yours in the first place. Pardon us for this and all of our sins, as we continue to confess in silence…

Silent Prayer

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Steadfast, ever faithful God, you are always with us. Day in and day out, you provide for us, you show us your grace, you inspire awe within us as we experience your goodness. But almighty God, our memory is so short! We forget your great acts of goodness and desire more signs from you. Lord, remind us of your power today. Revive within us a sense of gratitude for who you are and what you do as we silently confess our lack of contentment to you…
