Prayers of Confession on Maundy Thursday

Adapted from Psalm 130

Pastor: Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD! O Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleas for mercy!

All: If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?

Pastor: But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared.

All: I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; my soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen for the morning, more than watchmen for the morning.

Pastor: O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is plentiful redemption.

All: And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

*Silent Confession

Amen.

Humble Father, we admit to you tonight that our selfishness runs deeper than we know. Even in our service to others, we often expect a reward or result. We really only want to serve others when we see a benefit. It’s easy for us to lose motivation to live sacrificially when others don’t appreciate it. Please give us the faith to serve others regardless of their response as we silently confess our sins to you now…

Good Father, we thank you for inviting us to your table. You invite us to your heavenly feast, but we don’t show up to the party. Rather, we ignore your invitation, we get distracted by other work we think needs doing, we busy ourselves ensuring the right people have come, and we miss you. Please help us to see you in our midst as we offer our sins to you in silent confession…

Eternal God,
whose covenant with us is never broken, we confess that we fail to fulfill your will. Though you have bound yourself to us, we will not bind ourselves to you.
In Jesus Christ you serve us freely,
but we refuse your love
and withhold ourselves from others.
