Prayers of Confession on Hypocrisy

Where there is hypocrisy in our life, please name it.
Where we practice deception, please bring truth.
In your goodness, meet us and heal us
that we might be pure in heart and see you.

God of grace and mercy, how often we choose to set our eyes on things below rather than things above. We allow ourselves to be ruled by our calendars rather than our King. We honor our own comfort before honoring our Lord. We are consumed by petty concerns, but give lip service to holy concerns. For these things, and for many other sins, we ask for Your forgiveness. We do not yet know how to live. As You forgive us, we also ask that You might raise our eyes heavenward, and remind us of the greater story of Your love which we so often forget. We ask this in the Name of the One making His Kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

Father God, we confess that the actions of our hands do not often match the words of our mouths. We say one thing and do another. We give you praise and curse a friend, we sing songs of thanksgiving and gossip about another. Our actions belie the words that we speak and for this we repent. We would desire to act and speak in a way that glorifies you. We would desire that the meditations of our hearts and words of our mouths would be a reflection of our deeds of love, justice, and grace. Forgive us, we pray, for those words and deeds that have grieved your heart.

Dear Lord,

We confess that too often our hearts are far from you. We are a people who honor you with our lips but trust in our own wisdom to save us. We humbly repent of our hypocrisy, our blindness to injustice, our selfishness and pride. As we fix our gaze on Jesus, the author and perfector of faith, stir in us a holy desire to love and worship you with our whole heart and to love our neighbor as ourselves. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
