Prayers of Confession on God’s Name

Adapted from Psalm 115

Pastor: “Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness!”

All: Yet because of the sin in our hearts, we have strayed far from you. We have disobeyed your commandments, we have trusted our own judgement, and we wonder why we feel distant from you.

Pastor: We have worshipped idols of silver and gold—really idols of self and comfort. These have no power, these have no soul, these have no life. “Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them.”

All: Forgive us, gracious God, for not loving you as we ought, for not obeying you as we were taught, and for not trusting that our forgiveness has been bought.

Holy God, we are Your people, called by Your Name. We humble ourselves as we pray and seek Your face. God, help us to turn from our wicked ways. Please hear our cries to heaven and heal us from our sin that takes over like a disease. Forgive us for our failure to put You first, to rely on Your grace, and to trust in Your providence for our lives. May You hear our prayers of confession offered in this place so that You are forever glorified and we can live as a forgiven people. In the power of Jesus Christ we pray. Amen.

Father God, You alone are holy. We revere You as our one true God. Your name is higher than any other name. However, we confess that we can use that Name frivolously, without concern for its supremacy. Lord, please forgive us for those times that we neglect to give You the honor that You are due. Help us to walk faithfully in a manner that shows our respect for Your holiness. We pray this humbly in the name of Jesus, Your Son.  Amen.
