Prayers of Confession on Glory
Our compassionate and gracious God, we come before You because of Your promises and truths. You tell us that if we confess our sins then You will purify us of all unrighteousness. But even with such straightforward mercy, we lose focus on You and get caught up in everyday life. As we reveal that we haven’t lived our lives to their full purpose, light our hearts on fire for you our one true God. Forgive us our sins so that we can exalt Your eternal glory and spread the Good News in our everyday lives. Help us to invite You into every thought, action, and part of our lives so that Your goodness may shine through us. In Jesus name. Amen.

Gracious God – our Father:
Sufficient and sovereign, yet, compassionate and kind;
You tell us the truth while the world lies to us;
You give us light and hope,
while all around us cast darkness and despair.
When we mess up our lives – you give us a new one.
When we lose our way – You find us and guide us home.
When we are cast out – You call us by name and take us in.
It’s no wonder we praise You.
It’s no wonder we love You.

Yet sometimes we seek to steal Your glory,
to love ourselves and ignore You.
Forgive us – and in the quiet hear our heart’s confession
Of how we hurt others and dishonor You. (silence … )
Holy and merciful God, we come to You as Your humble children: in our sinfulness, and our failure to follow Your Word in loving our neighbors. God, You alone, know our hearts and how often we have sinned; in our selfishness, in ignoring Your calling to go after the one, in forgetting that Your Gospel isn’t just for the church, but for all. In Your great mercy, forgive our sins. Help us to live in a way that is glorifying to You, choosing to obey Your commandments, through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

Almighty God, you have surprised us with your presence in unexpected ways. In the expectations of our routine, we have missed the treasure that you place before us. We come to worship you in community often expecting nothing more than the usual. We begin our days, our weeks, assuming all will run as it always has. We do not look for the unexpected, for your active presence in our daily lives and for that we confess our sorrow. Forgive us for not allowing our eyes to catch the unexpected, to glimpse your glory in the ordinary. May this season, we see the presence of your Son by the power of your Spirit in new and transformative ways. Amen.

Lord, only You are significant enough to deserve glory. So why do we desire glory for ourselves? Lord, to know You is to have eternal life. So why are we satisfied with worldly wisdom and living in the moment? Through Jesus, we receive the love of the Father. So why do we hunger for the love of the world? Our desires are no longer trustworthy guides to goodness, and what seems natural to us no longer corresponds to Your design. Lord, Forgive us for our failures, overhaul the desires of our hearts, and grant us greater trust in Jesus, our Savior. Amen.

Heavenly Father, we confess that we often fill our lives with noise that obscures our ability to hear your voice. We do not even realize how many opportunities you give us to see your glory and to glorify you. Help us to have open ears, and turn our hearts and thoughts toward you so that we may praise you and receive your gifts. Hear our confession as we continue our prayers in silence…

Almighty God, from the very beginning, You have designed us for glorious work. You have given us Your Spirit and spread before us limitless resources. Because You have made us a royal priesthood, we now find ourselves perfectly matched to meet the needs of the world. Sadly, we confess that we fall into bad habits. We are often lazy and self-centered. We grumble and complain. We lie and cheat. We tear one another down. We deceive and seek our own glory rather than the glory that comes from You alone. Forgive us, we pray, dear God. Help us to work in the world in a way that glorifies You in all that we do. Restore us to our true identity as Your ambassadors. All of this we ask in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Heavenly Father, we confess that in our pursuit of good, we often miss opportunities to bring you honor and glory. We try to address our shortcomings by compensating for them, rather than by orienting around your will. We seek what seems higher to us rather than what is holy to you. Help us to first seek your Kingdom, and to put your glory ahead of our own. Hear our prayers as we continue our confession in silence…

Gracious, almighty God, we think of John the Baptist, who was a faithful witness to you. He understood that this role was pointing people toward you and not himself. Yet we know that all too often we elevate ourselves. We don’t deflect the glory that comes our way while we are all too eager to pass responsibility and blame to others. Please give us humility and help us to point people toward you as we silently confess our sins to you now….

Gracious Father, we confess that we have all sinned and fallen short of Your glory. We have neglected and misused Your holy worship. We have dealt unjustly and unkindly with our neighbors. We have not sought first Your Kingdom and Your righteousness. You have revealed Your wonderful love to us in Christ and have offered us pardon and salvation in Him; but we have turned away. We have run into temptation, and the sin we should have hated, we have committed. Have mercy on us, merciful Father. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways, to the glory of Your holy Name, Amen.

Gracious God, you are omnipotent, reigning over the universe, and ruling over us. You make a way where there seems to be no way. You expand possibilities beyond our dreams.
Yet our challenges shrink our imaginations and shorten our horizons.
We forget that you can make the impossible come true, in ways that bring you glory.
Forgive our short-sightedness. Remind us of your power. Pardon us for thinking that it is all up to our own resources. Forgive us for our sins, these and all others, as we continue to pray in silence…

Gracious God, can I truly say that you’re my glory? In a way, yes. I do derive my sense of worth from you, at least in part. And I do seek to live for your glory, at least some of the time. Yet, I’m aware that I have many other “glories.” I am defined by what I do, by my influence, by my successes (and sometimes, my failures). Forgive me, Lord, for all the ways I cannot truly say you are my glory.
Help me, by your grace, to discover more of what it means for you to be my glory. May I derive my sense of self from you, from your love and affirmation. May I seek your glory above all else.
To you, O Lord, be all the glory! Amen.

All: Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life. Lord Jesus, come in glory!

How great and glorious You are, O God. There is no one like You. You transform our weakness into strength. You forgive our stubbornness and arrogance, and fill us with Your generous wisdom. You turn our errors into stepping stones and our defeats into victories. You create beauty out of the ashes of our sinful nature. Forgive us, Lord, for being silent about Your goodness and for trusting the foolish wisdom of this world. Help us not to give up or give in to the temptations around us and to keep our eyes focused on Your loving grace. In Christ’s Name we pray. Amen.

Holy God of light and glory:
You alone are good.
You alone are pure and righteous.

You alone are worthy of our praise,
our devotion and honor.
In the brilliance of Your light,
we are revealed as we are and
left speechless … without excuse;
were it not for Your grace and mercy
we are hopeless as well.

Seeing who we really are,
we can hide no longer behind our bravado,
our rationalizations and our protests.
We confess that we are sinners
in need of your forgiveness.
As individuals and as a body.
we therefore join our hearts and voices to pray

Save us from the temptation to just stay on the mountain
Save us from the temptation to never engage

Lord, forgive us for putting aside our heart’s wild desire to worship You, whether for our own fear of embarrassment or the real threat of ridicule. Forgive us for not giving all we have toward your glory. We have not been nearly as grateful for your presence as we ought to be. We love you, Lord. Help us to love you more fully, fiercely, and readily today. Amen.
