Prayers of Confession on Disobedience

Adapted from Proverbs 15:1-16

Pastor: O wise and wonderful God, in our quick temper and selfish pride, we have not followed your example—you are slow to anger, abounding in love, and show steadfast faithfulness to your children.

All: We have been foolish in so many ways—in our speech, in our labors, in our thinking, and in our hearts. We have spoken perversely, and we have neglected wise speech.

Pastor: Daily we have walked in wickedness, feeding our hearts and minds with spiritual pollutants—explicit content, deceitful desires, and selfish gain. Our hearts are open before you, and you see and hate every sinful inclination.

All: Remove these sinful passions and weaknesses; make us strong by the power of your Holy Spirit through forgiveness in Jesus, for “better is a little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble with it.”

Loving and gracious God, we admit to You that we have distorted Your Word. Too often we pick and choose which part of Your Word to proclaim. Shying away from Your call to give all who we are, we only follow the part of Your Word that doesn’t ask much of us. Please forgive us for our unfaithfulness to Your Word as we confess our sins…

Gracious and compassionate God, You bless us with unfailing mercy, yet we have not followed You well. You call us to love, but we do not listen to You. You command us to serve, but we walk away from those in need. You direct us to worship, but we give our allegiance to idols. Forgive us, O Lord, and renew us. Help us to live as new creations in You. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Glorious God, You have always known that our sinful disobedience is serious enough to bring history and creation to complete destruction. You have cared enough to provide the only possible way of survival in the death and resurrection of Jesus. Part of Your perfect Easter plan is too mysterious for us to understand, but this part is clear: “You love the world so much You sent Your only Son, that whoever believes in Him might not perish but have everlasting life.” Forgive us for not trusting Your love in the way we live each day. For we ask it in the Name of Jesus, our triumphant King of kings and our Risen Lord of lords. Amen.

Eternal and Almighty God, To You is due all our praise and thanksgiving. You are a gracious, loving Lord! But we create false gods we choose to worship. Money, power, and pleasure guide our steps, not Your life-giving Holy Spirit. We put our trust in our efforts, not in Your grace and truth. We value what our culture offers, not the clear teachings of Scripture. Forgive us for our idolatry, O God. Help us to live as Your Son’s disciples to the glory and honor of Your name. Through Christ we pray. Amen.

God of grace and truth, in Jesus Christ You came among us as light shining in the darkness. We confess we have not welcomed Your light, or trusted Your good news to be good. We have closed our eyes to Your glory in our midst, expecting little, and hoping for less. Forgive our doubt and renew our hope, so we may receive the fullness of Your grace, and live in the truth of Jesus Christ the Lord. Through Him we pray. Amen.
