Prayers for Illumination on Truth

Sermon Illustrations on Truth

Adapted from Psalm 25:4-5 (NIV)

O Lord,

Show us your ways, Lord,

Teach us your paths.

Guide us in your truth and teach us,

for you are God my Savior,

and my hope is in you all day long.

O Lord, heavenly Father, in whom the fullness of light and wisdom,

enlighten our minds by your Holy Spirit,

and give us grace to receive your Word with reverence and humility,

without which no one can understand your truth. For Christ’s sake, Amen.

John Calvin

Guide us, O God, by your Word, and Holy Spirit, that in your light we may see light, in your truth find freedom, and in your will discover peace; through Christ our Lord, Amen.

O God, your Word is more precious than fine gold, and sweeter than purest honey. As we turn to your Scripture, send your Holy Spirit to infuse your Word with truth and grace — so that the good news of your love would shine before our eyes and delight our senses … so that we cannot help but respond with wonder, faith and trust. Amen.

God our helper, by your Holy Spirit, open our minds that as the Scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may be led into your truth and taught your will, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Dear Lord, I pray that You would open my mind to the truth of Your Word by means of the Holy Spirit. Open my eyes to see Jesus. Open my heart to love Him more and more. Open my will to do only that which is righteous in Your sight so that Your name may be glorified.

Keep me I pray, from presumptuous thoughts of my own importance and give me more understanding and illumination of Jesus. Give me a deeper understanding of what it meant for Him to come to earth and set aside His glory and live a perfect life, so that He might die on the cross as the perfect sacrifice to pay the price for my sins. Lord, give me an understanding heart to truly understand what this meant for You and the tremendous cost. I scarce can take it in.

Enable me to hear Your still small voice speaking in my heart, and open my eyes to see Jesus in every page of Your Word. Open the eyes of my heart my Father, and show me more and more of Jesus I pray. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Spirit of Truth, as we turn to your Word, let the light of your countenance be upon us,

that we may come to know more fully the one who is the way, the truth, and the life,

through Christ Jesus, our Lord. Amen.

At Your Feet

Rabbi Jesus, Teacher of teachers, thank you for empowering us to know and grow in wisdom and truth. You challenge us and stretch us and open us. You grant us grace to grow over time. We bless you for your patience and welcome. It gives us the confidence to draw near.

See us here, at your feet, ready to go deeper, ready for the new life it will bring. Speak Lord, we’re listening… pause for a moment of silence.
