Prayers for Illumination on Learning

Sermon Illustrations on Learning

Adapted from Psalm 25:4-5 (NIV)

O Lord,

Show us your ways, Lord,

Teach us your paths.

Guide us in your truth and teach us,

for you are God my Savior,

and my hope is in you all day long.

Blessed Lord, who caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen

Book of Common Prayer, 1552

Gracious Lord, like Nicodemus, we come to the word with many questions. Like the Pharisees, we can be captivated by correctness, intent on right answers. As we turn to your word, Spirit of God, do not let our desire for information dominate our need for transformation. Let us hear the word and be moved to greater faith and obedience. Amen

Dear Lord and God, I thank and praise You for Your Word, the Holy Scriptures, and for the promise that Your Holy Spirit will guide me into all truth. Give me a teachable spirit so that I may learn all that You would teach me in Your Word and prevent me from falling into deceptive teaching or false doctrine.

Lord, I ask that by Your Holy Spirit, You would open my mind to the truth and give me discernment so that I am not tossed about by every wind of doctrine. Thank You for what You are teaching me in Your Word and give me a thirst to read, mark learn and inwardly digest all that You would have me learn.

Lead me in the path off righteousness and guide me into all truth for Your holy name’s sake. Help me to come to a deeper knowledge of the Lord Jesus, so that I may grow in grace. Keep me from pride I pray, and may I walk humbly before You all the days of my life. I ask this in the precious name of my Savior, Jesus Christ my Lord, Amen.

At Your Feet

Rabbi Jesus, Teacher of teachers, thank you for empowering us to know and grow in wisdom and truth. You challenge us and stretch us and open us. You grant us grace to grow over time. We bless you for your patience and welcome. It gives us the confidence to draw near.

See us here, at your feet, ready to go deeper, ready for the new life it will bring. Speak Lord, we’re listening… pause for a moment of silence.
