When Jesus is tempted by the devil

Leader: When Jesus is tempted by the devil, the temptation he faces is to turn his trust away from God. We face this temptation every day, and give into it all too easily. Jesus responds to Satan, “one does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Matt 4:4b, NRSVUE).

So as people who have turned from God, tempted to trust ourselves and others, we pray, bringing our temptations before Christ. Our prayer is a declaration of trust, not in our own ability, but in God’s word of forgiveness and mercy.
