Between God and God's People

This whole Sunday’s worth of texts is about the relationship of God to God’s people. 

  • In what way has God been present among us in the past? 

  • How is God present now? 

  • How will we know? 

This Exodus passage gives one answer, albeit an answer located in a specific place and time: the Israelites would know God is present by the shiny face of Moses. Moses was the mediator, the go-between shuttling between the presence of God and the body of the people. His glowing visage proved it.

Today we live a great distance in time and space from shiny Moses, and so it can be hard to see what difference it makes to us that Moses came down the mountain and his face looked…
