Go Deeper on Father's Day

How do you connect with your congregation in a meaningful way on Father's Day? Recognizing and celebrating the fathers and father-figures in your midst is great — but how do we use this to draw people into the deeper things of God? There are a lot of possibilities and places to start!

• Jesus took his authority and defined himself in terms of the Father. Nowhere is this a bigger theme than the gospel of John. Consider exploring the fatherhood language in John. What does Jesus' relationship with his father say about our relationships with our human fathers—and God himself?

• The Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) is just as much about the father as about the sons. Is there a way to get your congregation to think about this well-known parable in a new way?

• The Old Testament prophets frequently speak of God as father to Israel. Probing passages like Isaiah 63:16 and 64:8, Jeremiah 3:19, and Malachi 2:10 could help your congregation understand God's relationship to his covenant people (in the old and new covenants).

• Paul frequently speaks of God's fatherhood in a way which is connected to both Jesus' and the Prophets'' way of thinking of God as Father. What do 1 Corinthians 8:5-6, 2 Corinthians 6:18, Ephesians 3:14-15, and many other passages from his epistles reveal?

• What about those for whom the idea of God the Father is terrifying because of the way their human father treated them? And even the best fathers are imperfect. How do we relate to our perfect Father in heaven when our earthly fathers are so far from it? (Consider looking at Matthew 7:7-12.)
