God’s Presence

Adapted from Exodus 3:1-6

Pastor: Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush.

All: He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.”

Pastor: When the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.”

All: And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

Adapted from Psalm 50:1-3, 6, 23

Pastor: The Mighty One, God the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth.

All: Our God comes; he does not keep silence; before him is a devouring fire, around him a mighty tempest.

Pastor: The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge!

All: The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me; to one who orders his way rightly I will show the salvation of God!

Adapted from Psalm 84

How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty!

My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord;

My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.

Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere.

I would rather be the doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.

Blessed are those who dwell in your house; they are ever praising you.

Psalm 84:1-2; 11-12

Leader: How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord of hosts! Our [souls] long, yes, faint for the courts of the Lord; [our] hearts and flesh sing to the living God.

People: For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.

Leader: O Lord of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you!

Adapted from Psalm 100:1-3

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.

Worship the Lord with Gladness.

Come into his presence with singing.

Knowing that the Lord is God.

It is he that made us, and we are his.

We are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Lord, please help us to whose we are as we worship you today.

Adapted from Ephesians 3:18,19

And I pray that you

Being rooted and established in love

Together, with all the Lord’s holy people,

To grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,

And to know this love that surpasses knowledge –

That you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Lord, we echo the words of Paul’s prayer as we worship you today. Help us all to know your love.

Adapted from Revelation 4:2, 6, 8-11

Pastor: At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, and day and night they never cease to say,

All: “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”

Pastor: And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

All: “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”

Adapted from Revelation 21:1-4

Pastor: Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.

All: And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

Pastor: And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.

All: He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

Come into God’s presence with thanksgiving in your hearts.

We will enter his gates with praise.

He has made us glad.

His love endures forever.

We join with all of creation,

To sing a new song. Rejoice, oh my soul, again I say, “Rejoice!”

Let us worship God together.

Inspired by 1 Kings 19:11-13

Leader: A great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered rocks.

People: But the Lord was not in the wind.

Leader: After the wind there was an earthquake.

People: But the Lord was not in the earthquake.

Leader: After the earthquake came a fire.

People: But the Lord was not in the fire.

Leader: And after the fire came the sound of sheer silence.

People: And Elijah knew that was where he would hear the voice of the Lord.
