Calls To Worship
Baptism
Adapted from Mark 1:2-4, 7-8
Leader: As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way;
People: the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,'”
Leader: John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
People: He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals.
Leader: I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Stuart Strachan Jr.
Leader: There are different spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; and there are different ministries and the same Lord;
People: Christ is just like the human body—a body is a unit; and all the parts of the body are one body, even though there are many parts.
Leader: We were all baptized by one Spirit into one body, whether Jew or Greek, or slave or free.
People: We were all given one Spirit to drink. Come, Holy Spirit!
All: Let us worship God!

Adapted from Psalm 29, Mark 1, Isaiah 43
The voice of the Lord is over the waters,
And in the temple God’s people say: Glory!
The heavens opened, the Spirit descended,
And a voice sounded: This is my Beloved Son.
Do not fear, for the Lord has spoken:
I have called you by name, you are mine.

In the beginning, darkness covered the deep, and God said: Let there be light.
The voice of the Lord is over the waters!
Through the words of the prophet, the Lord said: When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.
The voice of the Lord is over the waters!
Do not fear, says the Lord; I am with you. I have called you by name; you are mine.
I have called you by name, you are mine.
When Jesus was baptized by John, suddenly the heavens were opened.
The voice of the Lord is over the waters!
And as Jesus was coming out of the water, the Spirit of God rested on him like a dove.
The voice of the Lord is over the waters!
And a voice said: You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.
The voice of the Lord is over the waters!

Leader: As we enter into this season of Lent, we remember the words of your servant Paul, who said, “the wages of sin are death.” (Rom.6:23)
People: Lord have mercy.
Leader: Even though we have been bought with the blood of Christ, we often turn away from you and towards our own wicked desires.
People: Lord have mercy.
Leader: As we prepare to receive ashes this day, remind us that we only have one life to live. Remind us of our baptism, where we turned from death to life.
People: Keep us in your faithful arms until you return to judge the living and the dead.
Leader: Come, Let us worship the Lord.
Stuart Strachan Jr.
This call to worship is based on an original hymn text entitled, Be Still, Remember.
ONE:
Be still, remember, who you are.
Come touch the water of your birth.
Be dead to sin, alive to God.
Remember who you are in Jesus.
ALL
We are beloved.
We are heirs.
We children of God.
We are claimed.
We are marked.
We are named by God alone.
We are chosen and blessed
We are gifted to love
To witness through word and deed
