Calls To Worship

The Nations

Adapted from Genesis 1

Leader:            In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth, Darkness was over the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

People:          Centuries before Jesus walked among us, The Spirit of God was promised to him, so that he would bring justice to the nations.

Leader:            Jesus sent the Spirit of truth to teach us and give us peace.

People:          At Pentecost the Spirit came, as the rush of violent wind and tongues of fire.

All:                  That same Spirit is among us now.  Let us worship God!

Adapted from Psalm 86:8-10, NRSV

There is none like you, O Lord,

nor are there any works like yours.

All the nations you have made shall come

and bow down before you, O Lord,

and shall glorify your name.

For you are great and do wondrous things,

you alone are God.

Adapted from Psalm 113:1-4, New Living Translation

Leader: Praise the Lord! Yes, give praise, O servants of the Lord.

People: Praise the name of the Lord!

Leader: Blessed be the name of the Lord now and forever.

People: Everywhere—from east to west—praise the name of the Lord.

Leader: For the Lord is high above the nations;

People: His glory is higher than the heavens.

Adapted from Psalm 126

When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream.
Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then it was said among the nations, “The LORD has done great things for them.”
The LORD has done great things for us, and we rejoiced.
Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like the watercourses in the Negeb.
May those who sow in tears reap with shouts of joy.
Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, carrying their sheaves.

Adapted from Zephaniah 3:17

Leader: The prophet Zephaniah says: “The Lord, your God, is in your midst, He is mighty and will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will renew you in His love; He will exult over you with singing.”

People: Let it be known in all nations, God is our strength, God is our song and God is our salvation.

Leader: So, let us praise God and rejoice with God in song.

Adapted from John 12

Leader: Jesus said to them, “The light is with you for a little longer. Walk while you have the light, so that the darkness may not overtake you.”

People: Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

Leader: “If you walk in the darkness, you do not know where you are going.”

People: For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the Lord will arise upon us and His glory will appear over us.

Leader: “While you have the light, believe in the light, so that you may become children of light.”

People: Nations shall come to our light, and kings to the brightness of our dawn.

Adapted from John 12, assorted scriptures

Leader: Jesus said to them, “If you walk in the darkness, you do not know where you are going.”

People: Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.

People: Nations shall come to our light, and kings to the brightness of our dawn.

Leader: Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

People: Then we shall see and be radiant. The sun shall no longer be our light by day, nor shall the moon give light to us by night; but the Lord will be our everlasting light, and our God will be our glory.

Psalm 22:27 & 28

All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord; and all the families of the nations shall worship before him. For dominion belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations.

Adapted from Isaiah 60:1-5a

Leader:  Arise, shine, for your light has come,

And the glory of the Lord rises upon you.

People:  See darkness covers the earth

And thick darkness is over the peoples,

But the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you.

Leader:  Nations will come to your light

And kings to the brightness of your dawn.

People:  Lift up your eyes and look about you:

All assemble and come to you;

Your sons come from afar, and your daughters are carried on the arm.

Leader:  Then you will look and be radiant,

Your heart will throb and swell with joy.”

Adapted from Psalm 22:23-31

You who fear the Lord, praise him!

    All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!

    Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!

For he has not despised or scorned

    the suffering of the afflicted one;

he has not hidden his face from him

    but has listened to his cry for help.

From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly;

    before those who fear you I will fulfill my vows.

The poor will eat and be satisfied;

    those who seek the Lord will praise him—

    may your hearts live forever!

All the ends of the earth

    will remember and turn to the Lord,

and all the families of the nations

    will bow down before him,

for dominion belongs to the Lord

    and he rules over the nations.

All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;

    all who go down to the dust will kneel before him—

    those who cannot keep themselves alive.

Posterity will serve him;

    future generations will be told about the Lord.

They will proclaim his righteousness,

    declaring to a people yet unborn:

    He has done it!
