Calls To Worship

Holy Spirit

Adapted from Psalm 8

Leader: O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

People:   You have set your glory above the heavens. From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise.

Leader: When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place…

People: Who are we that you are mindful of us?

Leader: Creator of Heaven and Earth, thank You for creating us and loving us in a way that knows no limits.

People: We acknowledge You as Lord and praise You for all of creation.

Leader: Holy Spirit, we welcome You in this time of praise and worship.

People: Please, Lord, shape us and mold us into the disciples of Jesus Christ that You are calling us to be.

Adapted from Psalm 51:10-12

Leader:            Create in us clean hearts, O God, and put new and right spirits within us.

People:          Do not cast us away from your presence, and do not take your Holy Spirit from us.

Leader:            Restore to us the joy of your salvation

People:          and sustain in us a willing spirit.

All:                  Let us worship God!

Adapted from Ezekiel 37:5, 6, 9

This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones:

I will make breath enter you and you will come to life.

I will attach tendons to you

And make flesh come upon you

And cover you with skin.

I will put breath in you,

And you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

Come, breath from the four winds, and breathe.

Adapted from Matthew 12:18-21

Pastor: “Behold, my servant whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom my soul is well pleased.

All: I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.

Pastor: He will not quarrel or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets; a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory;

All: and in his name the Gentiles will hope.”

Adapted from Luke 4:18

Leader: As Jesus began his earthly ministry, he said, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.”

People: Through the Holy Spirit, we too have been anointed to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

Leader: May we bring good news to the poor, as ministers of Christ Jesus.

People: Come, Let us Worship the Lord!

Adapted from Acts 1:8

Jesus said, “And you will receive power,

When the Holy Spirit Comes on you.

And you will be my witnesses.

In Jerusalem, and all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Holy Spirit, on this Pentecost Sunday, we claim your power.

Inspired by 2 Corinthians 1:20-22

All of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ.

It is God who gives us the ability to stand firm.

God has commissioned us.

And God has identified us as his own

By placing the Holy Spirit in our hearts

As the first installment of everything he will give us.

Adapted from 1 Corinthians 12

Leader: “Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are various kinds of service, and the same Lord.”

People: “For as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Christ.”

Leader: “For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free;”

People:  We “were all given to drink into one Spirit.” Come, Holy Spirit!

All: Let us worship God!

Adapted from Revelation 4:2, 6, 8-11

Pastor: At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, and day and night they never cease to say,

All: “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”

Pastor: And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

All: “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”

 Adapted from Multiple Scriptures

Leader:            In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth,

Darkness was over the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

People:          Centuries before Jesus walked among us,

The Spirit of God was promised to him, so that he would bring justice to the nations.

Leader:           Jesus sent the Spirit of truth to teach us and give us peace.

People:         At Pentecost the Spirit came, as the rush of violent wind and tongues of fire.

All:                 That same Spirit is among us now.  Let us worship God!

A Prayer From Catherine of Siena

O Holy Spirit, come into my heart;

By your power draw it to yourself, God,

And give me charity with fear.

Guard me, Christ, from every evil thought,

And so warm and enflame me again

With your most gentle love

That every suffering may seem light to me.

My holy Father and my gentle Lord,

Help me in my every need.

Christ love! Christ love!

Remember the promise of the Lord:

God will pour out the Spirit on all flesh.

The Spirit helps us in our weakness,

Interceding with sighs to deep for words.

The Spirit of God renews the earth.

Bless the name of the Lord!

Adapted from John 3:5-8

Leader:   I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God

unless he is born of water and the Spirit.

People:  Flesh gives birth to flesh,

but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.

Leader:   You should not be surprised at my saying,

You must be born again.

People:  The wind blows wherever it pleases.

You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where

It comes from or where it is going.

Leader:  So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.

Bud Thoreen

Almighty God, send your Holy Spirit into our hearts, that he may govern and guide us according to your will, comfort us in all our temptations and afflictions, defend us from all error, and lead us into all truth, that we may be steadfast in the faith, increase in love and in all good works, and in the end, obtain eternal life; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Brunswick-Luneburg 1564, Pentecost, in the Service Book and Hymnal, 1958.
