Calls To Worship

Holiness

Adapted from Exodus 3:1-6 (ESV)

Pastor: Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. And the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush.

All: He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.”

Pastor: When the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.”

All: And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

Adapted from Leviticus 19:1-2; 20:7-8, 26 (ESV)

Pastor: And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them, You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy.

All: “Consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, for I am the LORD your God. Keep my statutes and do them; I am the LORD who sanctifies you.

Pastor: “You shall be holy to me, for I the LORD am holy and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be mine.”

Adapted from Deuteronomy 7:6-11 (ESV)

Pastor: For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. It was not because you were more significant than any other people that the LORD set his love on you and chose you, for you were the least of all peoples, but it is because the LORD loves you and is keeping the oath that he swore to your fathers, that the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the house of sinful slavery.

Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations, and repays to their face those who hate him, by destroying them. He will not be slack with one who hates him. He will repay him to his face. You shall therefore be careful to do the commandment and the statutes and the rules that I command you today.

 Adapted from Psalm 24:1-4 (ESV)

Pastor: The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein,

All: for he has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.

Pastor: Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD? And who shall stand in his holy place?

All: He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.

 Responsive Prayer from Psalm 29

Give the Lord the glory due his name;

Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.

The voice of the Lord is upon the waters:

The God of glory thunders:

The Lord is upon many waters.

The voice of the Lord is powerful;

The voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

The voice of the Lord divides the flames of fire.

The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the LORD twists the oaks and strips the forests bare.

And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”

The Lord sits upon the flood; the Lord sits as King forever.

The Lord will give strength to his people;

The Lord will bless his people with peace.

(Adapted for modern liturgical use from Ps 29:1-4, 7, 8, 10-11 (KJV), Ps 29:9 (NIV))

Adapted from Revelation 4:2, 6, 8-11

Pastor: At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne. And around the throne, on each side of the throne, are four living creatures, and day and night they never cease to say,

All: “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”

Pastor: And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

All: “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”

Eternal and Beautiful God,
The One who births us and names us
Grant us perspective
A holy centering of truth, humility, and our belovedness

Not too high that we fall away from you
our need of you
our need of others

Not too low that we fail to trust
to reach out for you
to reach out with you

In you, with you, for you we are
humble and powerful
unique and alike
common and regal
priceless and dust

Grant us perspective, Merciful One
A holy centering
Let no voice be too loud or too soft
So we may persevere in faith, in hope, in following, in becoming
Amen
